ζωολ. είδος μεγάλων σαρκοφάγων υδρόβιων θηλαστικών με ωραίο τρίχωμα, στα οποία υπάγονται οι ενυδρίδες
αρχ.
1. στον πληθ. αἱ λάταγες
(στο παιχνίδι τού κοττάβου) οι λίγες σταγόνες τού κρασιού που απέμεναν στον πυθμένα τού ποτηριού και τις οποίες αυτοί που έπαιζαν τον κότταβο έριχναν σε χάλκινο αγγείο, στο λαταγείο
2. συνεκδ. ο ήχος τών λατάγων που έπεφταν στο λαταγείο
3. παρυδάτιο τετράποδο, ίσως ο κάστορας («ὥσπερ ἐνυδρὶς καὶ λάταξ καὶ κροκόδειλος», Αριστοτ.).
[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. λάτ-αξ εμφανίζει επίθημα -αξ (πρβλ. άρπ-αξ). Η σύνδεση της με κελτικές και γερμανικές λ. με σημ. «βάλτος, τέλμα» (πρβλ. μέσ. ιρλδ. laith «βάλτος», lathach «λάσπη», αρχ. νορβ. lepja «βόρβορος, λάσπη») και η αναγωγή της σε ΙΕ ρίζα *lat- «υγρός, βάλτος» εμφανίζει δυσχέρειες. Τη λ. δανείστηκε η Λατινική με τη μορφή latex, -icis «ρευστότητα». Ο τ. λάταξ με τη σημ. «παρυδάτιο τετράποδο» συνδέεται πιθ. ετυμολογικώς με τον τ. λάταξ με σημ. «σταγόνες τού κρασιού που απομένουν στον πυθμένα τού ποτηριού»].
